Karen Buhler ( Maternity Care )
Dr. Buhler completed all her medical training in Vancouver. Her thirty-plus years of volunteer work and family practice with a focus on women’s health has given her a strong connection to the birthing community in Vancouver.
She practiced as a full service family physician for 27 years and now only provides care for pregnancy, labour and birth and new moms and babies.
She was a founding member of the Vancouver Women’s Health Collective in 1971 and has been an advocate for woman-centered care ever since. Later she played a role in the establishment of midwifery as a legal, regulated, and independent profession in B.C. She is the former Head of the Department of Family Practice at BC Women’s Hospital and continues to be involved in quality of care improvement projects and research.
She has two children, who are now in their twenties, and loves to spend time with her family and friends hiking, skiing, biking, kayaking, and canoeing–anything outdoors. Promoting and facilitating group care for pregnancy (see Connecting Pregnancy), and using Mindfulness meditation practice for stress relief and preparation for labour, are two of her current passions. She might be seen over in the corner with eyes lightly closed while waiting patiently for a baby to appear.
